Why Celebrating Success Is Important

why celebrating success is important

Celebrating success is important. But in a world that always wants us to reach higher and higher goals, it’s easy to forget how far we’ve come and what we’ve already accomplished.

Taking the time to celebrate your successes, big and small, helps you keep track of the important steps on your path to personal growth.

It’s up to you to decide what milestones to celebrate and how to celebrate them.

Each of us has to decide for ourselves what success means and how we want to achieve our goals.

This piece talks about some of the things that might affect those choices and why it’s important to celebrate success.

Why Throw a Success Party?

Success should be celebrated for two main reasons.

First, because success leads to more success.

Many people find that their success makes them want to do better and go further. Each promotion, raise in pay, or job well done moves them closer to their next goal.

They are more likely to do something if they have a goal to work toward, and they find it helpful to mark when they reach that goal.

When people succeed, it shows them that they can succeed again. So, a big part of building self-confidence and self-belief is celebrating success.

Second, we need to look at how far we’ve come.

When we work on ourselves, we tend to move “forwards and upwards.”

We are told to check back on our goals often to see if they have been reached. If we reach them, we tend to set new goals that are harder and push us to do more.

In other words, we don’t look at what has already been done. Instead, we look at what needs to be done.

But doing this just makes us want to look higher on the mountain of self-improvement.

There is always something more you can do, a new skill you can learn, or a promotion you can aim for. We tend to be unhappy because we are always trying to get more.

For our mental health, we should sometimes also look at how far we’ve come. We need to look at how far we’ve come and realize that just getting this far is a big deal.

The journey is important, too, and that includes each step along the way.

Being ready to look back and celebrate the big moments can help you bounce back from setbacks because you know that each one is only temporary.

There are also health reasons to be happy about success.

When you celebrate and feel successful, your body go through chemical changes. It makes your brain produce chemicals called endorphins, which make you feel good.

In turn, this makes you feel good about what you did well and more likely to want to do it again. So, celebrating success is a good way to keep you going, especially if you do it the right way.

Goal-setting and what success means

What you celebrate as success depends a lot on how you personally define success, which depends on your goals in life.

Your personal vision of where you want to be in life and your goals can be more or less formal.

Some people are very clear about their goals, while others prefer a more flexible approach.

At different points in your life, you will also have different goals and different things you want to accomplish. But pretty much everyone has some kind of goal.

Big goals and big accomplishments are not the only ways to be successful

Your big goal may seem far away and hard to reach at times. When that happens, it might help to look for small things to be proud of.

There may also be times when you are happy where you are and don’t want to change.

But even then, you’re likely to have small and big successes to celebrate, both at work and in your personal life.

Many of us are happy just to have made it through the week, and that’s fine.

Success means different things to different people.

How to Celebrate a Job Well Done

Just as different people have different ideas about what it means to be successful, so do the ways we choose to celebrate.

This is fine, but you should be aware that how you celebrate may affect how motivated you are to keep going.

Especially if you decide to give yourself a material reward and especially if you offer yourself a bribe (that is, you tell yourself that if you do something, you can have a reward), you may find it harder the next time to do what you need to do without a reward.

In other words, giving a reward is a type of motivation that comes from outside you. This is not as powerful as doing something because you want to, which is called intrinsic motivation.

There are many ways to celebrate things that help or provide intrinsic motivation.

Think about what you did well and what you could do better next time

Including other people, especially if they helped you do well, this reminds you that it’s hard to do things on your own.

Everyone likes to be thanked, so this will also make the group stronger and make it more likely that everyone will work well together next time.

Take the time to do something you enjoy, like going for a walk, watching the sunset, or just hanging out with people you care about.

One last thought

Taking the time to celebrate success can be hard, but it is important to do so for a number of reasons.

If you only think about the bad things, like what you haven’t done, instead of what you have, you tend to feel very down.

Celebrating your success gives you the strength to keep going and makes sure you have fun along the way.
